City Council Debate Tonight

Don't forget about the City Council election debate tonight between Jeff Weninger, Trinity Donovan, and Becky Jackson:

The forum will take place 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 26 at the Downtown Chandler Library, 22 S. Delaware St., in the City Council Chambers, second floor. “As we've seen in recent weeks, the city's leadership has a profound impact on all of us. We hope this forum will help residents when casting that important vote in May,” said Brian Johnson, editor of the Connection.

Johnson will co-host the event with community activist and Connection columnist Sandra Laney. Johnson said candidates would have an opportunity to introduce themselves and make concluding comments at the end of the 90-minute discussion. Weninger said the run-off forum would be more helpful to voters than previous forums.

Unfortunately, the Amazing Jake will be unable to attend the live performance.  However, through the magic of TiVo I will be watching the debate on Channel 11 later in the evening.

Some questions I'd like to see asked and answered:

Under what specific circumstances would it be appropriate to use eminent domain for redevelopment purposes?  Is it appropriate (not legal, but apropriate) for the City to demolish private property, then sell that property to another private owner?

How should private property siezed in eminent domain actions be valued when payment is made to the original property owner?  Should it be valued at it's current valuation, or the future value after the area is redeveloped?

Please give SPECIFIC recommendations that will speed road construction in SE Chandler to improve traffic flow.  How will you pay for that plan?

What is your position on the issue of Covance moving to Chandler?  Is public discomfort over animal testing grounds to keep a legal and necessary industry out of the City?

Explain how you will be open and responsive to public comments on City issues and your own performance on the Council.  What can you tell us about how you will ensure open communication of your decisions and positions.

If you have any other questions you'd like to see asked, post them in the comments here.

  1. Yawn. The forum tonight was pretty boring. The only passion I heard was from Jeff Weninger, who was straightforward in his answers. What did you think?
