Matt Orlando Contacts The Jake Files

I got the following from Matt Orlando yesterday, both by comment on the About page, and via email:

I’ve been reading you files for sometime and enjoyed your writings.
Like to talk to you. Can you provide a telephone number?

Best Regards,

Here is my response, sent via email a few minutes ago:

Dear Councilman Orlando,

Thanks for contacting me.  In regards to your request for a contact number, I don’t think that would be in anyone’s interest.

Since you didn’t elaborate in your email, I can only presume you would like to discuss either A) your reasons for seeking the dismissal of Mark Pentz from the City Manager position, B) my position on a potential recall petition, C) an apology from me for referring to you as an “idiot,” or D) my thoughts on city government.

For reasons that I outlined here, I have no desire for my identity to be known.  I am neither a candidate for office nor a public figure, and I’m under no obligation to make my identity known.  I have no special insight to any particular issue beyond what any other person would have.  I choose to be as well-informed as I can, given what is reported in the media and through public sources.

Regarding Item B above, I have publicly posted that I am generally opposed to recall on principle.  Given what I know about this situation, I would be content with letting the electorate in the next election cycle decide whether they want you to continue in office, based on your entire record while in office.  I’ll keep an open mind, based on what information is presented by advocates of the recall, but I can’t imagine what would persuade me to change that position at this time.

Regarding Item C, use of the word “idiot” was regrettable.  I like to distinguish myself from those blogs that frequently and routinely use insults and putdowns to make their points, and I let my anger get the best of me in the moment.  Given that public officials generally don’t succeed without having a thick skin, I don’t really expect that you’re seeking an apology, but you have it nonetheless.

Regarding Item D, tune in to this blog for my periodic thoughts on issues both local and otherwise.

So, regarding Item A, I would certainly like to hear from you what could justify the interrogation that Mr. Pentz received, but I’m not sure what you could say to me privately that you haven’t said, or couldn’t say, publicly.  I’ve read your “My Turn” column in yesterday’s

Republic (unfortunately I can’t seem to find it online).  I also watched the City Council meeting and came to the same conclusions that most other people watching likely did.  I felt the treatment was belittling and petty, and I’m not sure what you could say that would be persuasive in changing that opinion.  If there is something that I have posted that is factually inaccurate or you feel is distorted in some way, I’d be happy to correct the matter.  You are welcome, as is anyone else, to post a comment on my site if you would like to correct the record or add any other insight.

Thanks again for contacting me.  I’m glad that elected officials are listening when the public is talking.

Amazing Jake

  1. Hi Jake,

An interesting exchange. I’ll be linking to it.

I also received a response back from Ray Pilara and Lowell Huggins to my inquiries – they’re posted now.

By the way, I’d be happy to speak with Mr. Orlando. And if you run across his “My Turn” column, please let me know – I missed it too.

  2. Oh, and hey: how ’bout emailing my contact info to that newspaper editor that got in touch with you about Chandler bloggers? I’d love to do an interview. 🙂

  3. Ha! Isn’t it gratifying to know you’re on the radar of our Councilmembers? Or is it scary? The ‘Gang of Four’ went on and on about how people must have feared retribution when filling out (or for the few who didn’t–not to fill out) the 360 review that they must know a thing or two about retribution/vindictiveness. Definitely hold your ground.
Many of us believe that Mr. Orlando et al have managed to convince themselves that what they did to our city manager and our city is right. When you tell yourself and others a lie over and over, it’s probably not too hard to brainwash yourself. I’m so glad that Chandler residents aren’t falling for it.

  4. By the way, Mr. Orlando, if you’re reading this. . . . One of my favorite moments of the meeting was when you mentioned the two people who supposedly contacted you to complain about Mr. Pentz’s “yelling” at them. You said, exactly, that they had contacted you “out of the blue” and were “not solicited by me, I can assure you that, Mark. It wasn’t my style–it’s not my style.” Fast forward to near the end of the ordeal, when you started rattling off names of people you’d contacted who had worked with Mr. Pentz previously and insinuating that they’d had negative things to say about him. Looking back over the video, I had to laugh out loud when I heard you say the “not my style” comment again. Hate to tell you this, Mr. Orlando, but it IS your style. What a sleazy move, to try this sneak attack on Mr. Pentz, when you knew there was no way he would be able to refute it then and there. We were all disgusted–we are disgusted with you. I think Mr. Pentz took the high road by offering the separation agreement, when in many eyes, he could have easily sued you for your slanderous remarks. Perhaps the people you probably misrepresented will do so. Maybe I’ll send them a copy of the meeting. . .

  5. Jake,
Did you see that the Connection is hosting a forum for run-off candidates at 7pm on Wednesday, April 26? You can send questions for the candidates to Brian Johnson, the editor, who will be hosting. His email is .

  6. Jake,
I have a question for you:
Why didn’t Mr. Orlando ask Mr. Sepuleda to get the same staff member he used to get a chandler
residents’ UNLISTED phone number? It seems, as though, the “mysterious staff person” is very good at
locating personal and private unpublished information. I wonder why?……….. Just another example of Matt
Orlando wanting to keep things out of the public eye.

  7. Hi again,

I just heard back from Councilman Orlando. He agreed to follow up with me on questions and by phone.

He will be responding to an email I sent with some comments, and then we’ll follow up by a phone chat. I’ll post the results.

I’ve explained my approach more here.

  8. In response to p.k.’s remark regarding the “mysterious staff person” who provided resident information to Councilman Sepulveda.

The “mysterious staff person” was a staff person who reports directly to the Mayor and council. Sepulveda’s wife “Sherry Sepulveda” doesn’t report to the Mayor and Council, and Sepulveda’s wife is not in the Public Works Department. For anyone that is interested in the truth, they should contact the Mayor and Council’s office at 480-782-2200 or
